Make a Difference
Nadia has been described as a cornerstone of the community in Stockport. As the Network Lead for Stockport Women & Girls (SWAG), the Manager of Heaton Norris Community Centre (HNCC), and the Founder and CEO of Make a Difference, Nadia’s life’s work is centred around one mission: empowering women, girls, and vulnerable communities through grassroots change.
Born in Manchester to a strictly religious Indian Punjabi family, Nadia’s early years were shaped by hardship and deprivation. At just 17, in a bold act of self-liberation, she ‘divorced’ herself from a household and culture that sought to silence her voice and restrict her choices. She faced isolation, abuse, and the daunting task of rebuilding her life — but she emerged resilient and determined. Today, Nadia is a proud mother of two daughters and an award-winning leader whose lived experiences fuel her passion to uplift others.
“It’s fair to say that my own lived in experiences have made me the woman I am today,” Nadia says. “I’m passionate about supporting others who find themselves in difficult situations. Through my own networks and contacts, I can make a difference — even if it’s just by connecting someone to the right support.”
Since taking the reins at Heaton Norris Community Centre over nine years ago, Nadia has transformed it into a thriving hub of inclusivity. What started with just three weekly groups has grown into a vibrant schedule of 23 weekly sessions catering to all ages and needs — from Asylum Seekers and Refugees, to Men Only and Young Women groups, to support for those living with addiction or disabilities.
“Our door is open to anyone facing personal challenges. HNCC is here for the whole community — a place to be heard, to connect, and to heal,”
It’s this ethos of warmth and openness that defines HNCC. The centre is a true lifeline for many and a symbol of hope for the neighbourhood.
In 2017, Nadia founded Make a Difference, a social initiative bringing together people across Greater Manchester. It’s more than a community project — it’s a movement that celebrates diversity, inclusion, and unity. Through events, recreational activities, catering, day trips, and specialised support for people with disabilities and additional needs, the organisation is helping to build bridges and break barriers.
Whether it’s planning heritage projects or supporting marginalised groups, Make a Difference continues to deliver powerful change, rooted in compassion and lived experience.
Nadia’s commitment to women and girls is at the core of her work. Through her leadership with Stockport Women & Girls, and as a GM4Women member representing Stockport, she is working tirelessly to create safe spaces, shape policy, and inspire the next generation.
“We build relationships. We listen. We act,” she says with quiet pride.
